White Cypress Properties

  • White Cypress (botanically known as Callitris glaucophylla) is a native Australian softwood that naturally grows across inland regions of New South Wales, Queensland, Victoria, and South Australia.

Thriving in semi-arid woodlands and forests, White Cypress has been used for generations by First Nations peoples and early settlers alike for its durability and natural resistance to termites. Today, it continues to be sustainably harvested from these native forests, making it an authentic and uniquely Australian timber choice with deep local roots and a long history in Australian building and design.

  • White Cypress is a naturally durable Australian softwood, with a density typically around 680 kg/m³.

  • White Cypress has a Janka hardness rating of around 6.4 kN, which places it in the moderately hard category for softwoods.

  • White Cypress is rated Durability Class 1 for both above-ground and in-ground use. This means it offers excellent natural durability, typically lasting over 40 years above ground and around 25 years in direct ground contact without the need for chemical treatment — making it a reliable choice for harsh Australian conditions.

  • White Cypress is naturally termite-resistant thanks to its high content of natural oils. This makes it a dependable choice for decking, cladding, and structural uses, offering long-lasting protection without the need for additional chemical treatments.

  • Not susceptible: This timber is not susceptible to lyctid borer attack.

  • White Cypress provides a natural level of fire resistance and is rated to BAL-12.5 under Australian Standard AS 3959. This makes it suitable for use in areas with lower bushfire risk, offering a balance of durability and aesthetic appeal.

  • Typical uses of White Cypress timber include:

    • Decking

    • Cladding and weatherboards

    • Flooring

    • Posts and beams

    • Pergolas and outdoor structures

    • Fencing and gates

    • Joinery and feature walls

Its natural termite resistance, durability, attractive light tones, and ease of working make White Cypress a versatile choice for both structural and decorative projects in residential and commercial settings.

Colour variations in White Cypress Timber

White Cypress is appreciated for its gentle, inviting colour palette that ranges from pale yellow and creamy tones to light honey browns. The sapwood is typically lighter still, adding a subtle contrast that highlights the heartwood’s warmth. Its texture is fine and even, and while the grain is generally straight, occasional tight knots bring natural character and charm. Some common questions about White Cypress Timber

  • White Cypress Timber is a durable Australian softwood sourced mainly from the species Callitris glaucophylla, also known as Cypress Pine. It is prized for its natural termite resistance and warm, creamy tones, making it a sought-after choice for both structural and decorative uses across Australia.

  • White Cypress is a highly versatile Australian softwood used in flooring, cladding, lining boards, structural framing, fencing, and landscaping. Its natural termite resistance, durability, and stability make it ideal for both residential and commercial applications, including outdoor and in-ground use. With its warm, pale hues and fine, even grain, it’s also a popular choice for joinery, feature walls, and architectural detailing.

  • White Cypress is suitable for use in bushfire-prone areas up to BAL 12.5 (Bushfire Attack Level) without the need for additional fire-retardant treatment. With its natural durability, termite resistance, and dimensional stability, it is a dependable option for decking, cladding, fencing, and structural applications in areas with lower bushfire risk.

  • White Cypress is naturally durable and highly termite-resistant, so it usually doesn’t need to be treated before use in above-ground applications. Its heartwood is rated Durability Class 1 (very durable) above ground and Class 2 in ground, making it suitable for a wide range of uses without additional treatment. However, where extra protection is desired — especially for in-ground contact, high moisture areas, or harsh environmental conditions — White Cypress can be treated to further enhance its resistance to decay and fungal attack. For external applications, applying a protective oil or sealer is recommended to help preserve its warm colour and reduce weathering effects over time.
  • White Cypress timber is naturally durable and remarkably resilient. As an Australian softwood, it offers excellent resistance to termites and decay, with its heartwood rated Durability Class 1 above ground. While not as hard as dense hardwoods, it still provides good hardness (Janka rating around 6.7 kN), making it suitable for flooring, decking, and structural uses exposed to moderate wear and weather. Its stability and fine grain also help minimise movement and surface checking over time.

  • White Cypress comes primarily from the species Callitris glaucophylla, which is also known as Cypress Pine. Other closely related species sometimes harvested include Callitris columellaris and Callitris endlicheri, though Callitris glaucophylla is by far the most common and widely used commercially. All share similar qualities: naturally high termite resistance, good durability (particularly the heartwood), and an attractive pale yellow to light brown colour. These properties make White Cypress highly valued for structural timber, flooring, cladding, fencing, and architectural applications across Australia.
