At North Eden Timber, we offer a range of high-quality timber posts perfect for various applications, including deck sub-frames, fencing and construction. Our durable hardwood posts provide exceptional strength and longevity, making them ideal for outdoor settings. Additionally, our specialty feature posts highlight the natural beauty of Australian hardwood, adding character to architectural and decorative projects.

What is Boxed Heart (BH)?

ree

Boxed Heart (BH) posts contain the central heartwood of the tree, meaning the natural growth stresses are retained within the post. While BH posts are strong and cost-effective, they are more prone to splitting and checking as they dry. They are commonly used in applications where movement or cracks are not a concern. We predominantly stock Ironbark, Spotted Gum and  Red Gum although we can also source other

species.

Characteristics

  • The growth rings wrap around the center

  • Prone to checking, splitting and twisting as the timber dries

  • Usually more economical due to higher yield from the log

  • Common in larger section posts such as 200×200mm or 150×150mm

Best suited for

  • Rural fencing

  • Landscaping

  • Low aesthetic-requirement projects

  • Where some movement is acceptable

What is Free of Heart (FOH)?

ree

Free of Heart (FOH) posts are cut so the core (or heart) of the log is excluded. This reduces the risk of splitting, warping and excessive movement, making FOH posts more stable and ideal for structural applications requiring precision and longevity. We stock FOH posts in Ironbark, Spotted Gum, Red Gum with other species available upon request.

Characteristics

  • Reduced checking, twisting, and bowing

  • More uniform grain and appearance

  • Ideal where straightness and long-term performance matter

  • Less available and usually higher cost due to selective cutting

Best suited for

  • Structural posts and beams

  • Architectural and visible applications

  • Pergolas, decks, feature posts, and commercial builds

  • Coastal and high-traffic environments
